Elijah

Fire. Drought. Fury. Doubt. Redemption.

Mendelssohn's great oratorio is full of drought and thunder, confrontation and catastrophe, desperate crowds, moments of tenderness, and a prophet who is as human as he is formidable. The story moves from a land ravaged by drought to miracles, persecution, despair, and ultimately a vision of hope and renewal.

For this performance, Pax Chorale and the Canadian Chamber Orchestra come together to take on one of the monumental works of the choral repertoire.

A hundred voices meet fourteen musicians. The sheer force of the choir is matched by the CCO's intensity and responsiveness, bringing both scale and intimacy to Mendelssohn's score, and Elijah gives them plenty to work with.

There are choruses that arrive like a wall of sound. There are moments of startling quiet. There is violence, fear, exhaustion, tenderness, anger, faith, and doubt. Mendelssohn drew deeply on the traditions of Bach and Handel while giving the oratorio the dramatic energy and orchestral colour of the Romantic era. The result is part sacred drama, part symphonic spectacle, and almost operatic in its storytelling.

Mendelssohn's Elijah; A story of crisis, conviction, and the search for hope.
